Can anyone explain how to use the fractal edit, I am trying to understand how to know what settings will set my trees where. I usually wind up with my trees on the higher parts of my map and the flat areas barren. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim (Lonewolf_8126)

use the slope and altitude constraints , play with it a bit and the editor will show you where it is placing them.  or If you use bitmap with greyscale image
you can place them where you wish, by selecting edit in the object creator then select bitmap you made (say in photo shop) then use browse to go to it in the fractal editor.
where it says Filename.  when it shows in the fractal editor it will also show in the window in the object creator.
the bitmap must be in the maps directory and must be a grayscale .png 640 X 640 pixels to make it work. then complete by adding number of trees you want to
fit the picture.  Black will be no trees and white areas will be where the trees will appear.

Thanks, but what I am not understanding is how does it show me where my trees are going? now with the slope and altitude constraints, what number ranges dictate the elevation such as hills and mountains. It seems my trees always go on the highest parts of my map and leave the lower valleys and plains barren and empty

Thanks,
Jim

Placing objects.

Altitude constraint determines how high the trees will go up the hills.
Max altitude .Highest 0.999999 with fuzzy at 0. (The fuzzy determines how defined the boundary or cut off point will be
Min altitude.lowest will be 0.0

Slope constraint  will place the trees on the slopes and flats,
min set at 0.0 will fill all flat areas within the range you have set the altitude restraints.
Max will put your trees on the steeper slopes the higher the value you enter.

Textures are placed in the same manner using similar controls in the texture placer

Try using only the max min altitude settings first and leave the slope constraints boxes unchecked so you can see how the altitude settings work.
Then add in the min slope constraints to fill in any bald flat areas and finally the Max slope settings to get trees on to the steep slopes.
I often dont use the slope constraint settings at all as they often only tend to confuse the issue. If you leave them off they will not apply and the trees will place all over the map with no slope restraints at all.

.
You can veiw the result of the changes you make before you apply by looking at  the little map box above the settings or click preveiw to see a larger map.
The little preview box will only show black and white, the white will be the area filled by trees. If you click colour you can change the indicator colour to something more appropriate (like purple for fireweed)  and make it easier to see where they will end up.
When you get them in the right places click apply and the fractual placer will do the rest. If there are not enough trees, increase the number and click apply again. (You can change the numbers/Setting and click apply again as many times as you want until you get the desired result.)
When it is good, Right click on the child object and delete it before you start on the next object, otherwise they will be redistributed again.
later as you become more proficient you can fill out several child object  sets of object placements and cick apply to do them all at once.

You will need to spend some time getting to know how it works.
Always save when you have the result you want before doing the next step.
THAT WAY IF YOU STUFF UP YOU CAN EXIT THE EDITOR WITHOUT SAVING AND IT WILL REOPEN AT THE LAST PLACE YOU SAVED.

Have fun

Wow Dan, thanks alot man that helped me out so much. I guess I should have stuck with the map editor rather than delete it and stop playing...lol But I am working on a new map when its done I'll make sure you get it so you can let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Jim

I am unable to find where the map editor saves my files on my computer. I just completed a map and created the SPK but can't find were it was stored on my computer. Is there any way to change where the file is stored so I can set it to a file I choose?

Thanks
Jim

Check the custom levels folder with in the game folder. I think it sends them there by default. I am not a map maker per sa like Dan, but that's where it sent my attempts too, LOL

Rez325,

Thanks, I found it. FOr some reason Windows puts it in a compatability folder in the custom level folder.
