No doubt you have heard reports of the earthquake that hit New Zealand last night.
Damage has been Severe in the upper third of the South Island with Medium damage
in the Capital City (Wellington) in the bottom of the North Island.
So far only 4 deaths have been reported as attributable to the quakes.
Hundreds of aftershocks are continuing througout the affected area, some as severe
as 5.3 on the R.S.

Massive damage has been inflicted on the transport infrastructure along the east coast
of the upper South Island. Road and Rail links have been severed both North and South
of the epicentre and tourists trapped between are being lifted out by military helicopters
that are also being used to transport aid and personell into the district..

In Rotorua, the region I am, (Centre right of the North Island) the resulting effects were limited to two minutes of
strong shaking at two minutes past midnight. No damage has been reported here.

thanks Guys.

The New Zealand Navy was to celebrate its 75th aniversery in the week following the quake.
Navy ships from several nations were visiting to take part, including a U.S. ship which was the first to visit N.Z. since the Ban on Nuclear powered ships caused a rift in relations regarding the U.S.'s  Not Confirm or Deny Policy in response,... which effectively restricted U.S. naval access to N.Z.

Many overseas tourists and residents of Kaikoura have been thankful for the assistance given by the visiting ships from all Nations.
Particulary the airlifts out of stricken areas to those ships standing off the coast waiting to take them to safety.

Details in the following article.
........................................................................................
Lane Nichols ... Lane Nichols is a senior NZ Herald reporter

A fleet of international warships is bypassing Auckland's historic naval celebrations and heading for Kaikoura to assist with the earthquake response.

The fleet includes the first United States warship to visit New Zealand in 33 years.

The USS Sampson was due to enter Auckland Harbour today for the International Naval Review as part of celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the Royal New Zealand Navy.

The historic visit is the first since the Anzus rift in the 1980s sparked by New Zealand's landmark anti-nuclear policy.

However Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee confirmed that New Zealand had accepted offers of help with the quake recovery from five nations attending the International Naval Review - the United States, Australia, Canada, Japan and Singapore.

"The USS Sampson, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, has departed from the Hauraki Gulf and is now on its way to Kaikoura, where it will deploy two MH60 helicopters to help as required. The US has also offered a P-3 Orion for surveillance flights," Brownlee said.

The Australian Defence Force has diverted the HMAS Darwin from her planned participation review.

"The Darwin is expected to arrive off the Kaikoura coast on Wednesday evening and will deploy its Seahawk helicopter from offshore. Canada is sending its frigate the HMCS Vancouver."

Brownlee said the New Zealand Navy had already sent HMNZS Canterbury and HMNZS Wellington to Kaikoura and would also send HMNZS Te Kaha and tanker ship, HMNZS Endeavour.
.........................................

A Big thank you to all the servicemen involved in the rescue operations..
